and I love it.
Nope not talking about Marmite but Root Beer!
I first fell in love with the stuff when I tasted it at McDonalds years back but alas it wasn’t for most Brits palates so they stopped selling it. Most of my mates said they hated the stuff and that it tasted like ‘deep heat’ (always wondered how they knew what that tasted like!) or bubble gum or toothpaste.
I worked in the USA a lot in ’98 and rekindled my love for root beer. Whenever I go back to the USA I always drink gallons of the stuff. Its hard to find in Europe but when you do its usually a cheap copy.
Imagine my surprise then when the other week I found some Boylans of New Jersey’s root beer and birch beer! They even had grape so Miss P was happy, in fact she stormed across the road as soon as I told her, leaving me behind!
I was on Phase one of the SB Diet so had to leave it chilling until I was in Phase 2, even then its probably against the rules but I couldnt wait. They have nearly sold out so I hope ICA keep stocking it! I guess its a good sign they nearly sold out as there must be a demand.
Now Birch Beer I have not seen or tasted in a long long time. In fact I remember the last time I drank some, I was in a very small town near Montclair in New Jersey. There was a second hand bookshop there which claimed to have over a million books. They did! I had to pay a lot of excess luggage charges on that trip as they had a lot of out of print stuff, it was at the time I was reading everything I could get my hands on about President Richard Nixon.
It was really hot and I stopped off at a Mom and Pop store and they were making a fuss of me as they had never had a Brit in there before, told you it was a small place. They had no root beer left but they had this Birch Beer stuff which they said was even better. It has a more minty taste but definitely very very nice.
Mine is still chilling in the fridge as Sarah wants some so I have to wait as they dont have any more left at ICA.
