I had my Ipod on today on the shuffle and it threw three Morrissey numbers at me which made me smile. I love that random selection of tracks on the Ipod.
It got me thinking because all three tracks are very auto-biographical, I could have written some of these lyrics about my life…each track is of a very different stage in my life, some very low but it ends in a fantastic ‘fuck you’ crescendo…
The tracks…
Late Night, Maudlin Street, check the full lyrics out but this verse really hits home…
‘The last night on Maudlin Street
Goodbye house, goodbye stairs
I was born here
And I was raised here, and
…I took some stick here’
These lyrics remind me of a certain house in which I grew up in during my teenage years.
The second track was ‘All You Need is Me’ from Years of Refusal. Full lyrics here
I was a small, fat child in a council house
There was only one thing I ever dreamed about
And Fate has just
Handed it to me – whoopee
You don’t like me, but you love me
Either way you’re wrong
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
And the final track was the glorious ‘I’m OK By Myself’
I reproduce the full lyrics here…I love this number and its so true in my life thats for sure! Actually I need a Morrissey running playlist, just a thirty minute one…..I need to knock up an inspiring one for tonights run…
Could this be an arm around my waist?
well, surely the hand contains a knife?
it’s been so all of my life
why change now?
“it hasn’t!”
now this might surprise you, but
I find I’m OK by myself
and I don’t need you
or your morality to save me
no, no, no, no, no
Then came an arm around my shoulder
well surely the hand holds a revolver?
it’s been so all of my life
why change now?
“it hasn’t!”
now this might disturb you, but
I find I’m OK by myself
and I don’t need you
or your benevolence to make sense
Noooooooo!
Noooooooo!
Noooooooo!
Noooooooo!
After all these years I find I’m OK by myself
and I don’t need you
or your homespun philosophy
no, no, no, no
This might make you throw up in your bed:
I’M OK BY MYSELF!
and I don’t need you
and I never have, I never have
Noooooooo!
Noooooooo!
Noooooooo!
Noooooooo!

I rather like line “Don’t leave your torch behind, power cut ahead, 1972 you know” – its extremely evocative of a time long gone.
You are right Dave. I rate this is as Moz’s best work. So many themes in one song, incredible.
One imagines its very autobiographical for him….
