I was up till 3am reading because I couldn’t sleep. Woke up at 7am couldn’t get back to sleep, looked out the window and it was a heavy snowstorm with plenty of it on the ground.
I had a nice breakfast and ventured out to take some suits to Esme my local dry cleaner.
It really was beautiful, the snowfall had stopped and the snow was already to starting to melt, it was -5 but so lovely, so fresh and invigorating. A real go out for a walk kind of weather.
I dropped off my suits and picked up my freshly laundered shirts (well I am a bachelor!) and had a good conversation with Esme. He is Assyrian and doesn’t speak English but in the last year we have got by.
Today we discussed the weather, the future of the kronor, will Sweden get the Euro, what he thinks of the Swedish Prime Minister oh and we both agreed that if Mona Sahlin gets elected we will desert our posts and the country!
I think my spoken Swedish is really starting to improve now and its all down to my 100 day challenge I reckon. I am putting the effort in now and not expecting to suddenly wake up one day fluent. I am even starting to understand Glenn Hysen on FIFA who speak Göteborgska!
Lately I have been a bit out of sorts for various personal reasons and I was starting to really think my time was up in Sweden. Professionally and career wise its all good but its more the social side. However today it dawned on me that I do love Sweden on days like this and dont want to leave..well unless Mona Sahlin and the redgroans get in that is!

You determination to learn Swedish is really impressive – you can’t give up and leave yet – at least wait until your Swedish is fluent – it is always good to have a second language under your belt.
Have you taken those much needed steps to get out and increase your social circle? There are plenty of expat groups around and they are the best place to start – even if you don’t want to surround yourself with expats. You inspired me to write about friends recently – it is really hard to meet people in this country, it takes a long time. But the Swedes make pretty good friends once you have them.
