We are all Royalists now

in Our Man in Sweden

Today is the wedding of the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria to Daniel wassishisname?  Yeah he is a commoner rather than some ponced up duke from Western Pomerania or somewhere.

When the engagement was announced I was interested but only as a foreigner looking in. It was a chance to read up and hear about some Swedish royal history.  Still think its a shame its a French royal line and not Olof the Red or something.

However the media has been saturated with the wedding. I do understand, she will be the Queen of Sweden one day and its the Swedes first Royal Wedding in thirty years. I have seen so many people leaving Årsta all dressed up to go to town and watch the procession.

However, as with many things Swedish I have mentally checked out. This is not a conscious decision its something that’s just happened.

For two and a half years I have thrown myself into being Swedish or at least trying to. I can count the amount of times I have been in an ‘Irish’ bar in Stockholm on two hands, I always try and speak Swedish with strangers and in my work I have really adapted to the Nordic style of management.

Now though my mind is wandering to California, only natural I guess. So instead of going into town and watching the Wedding parade and taking photos for this blog, I have been at home studying balanced score cards. Riveting!

I was always a fervent Royalist but thesedays my feelings are lukewarm. I can only imagine that the Swedish State, therefore us the taxpayers are shelling out big time for this wedding. Just look at the police protection for a start. In this day and age with high unemployment and cut backs in public expenditure I am hoping the King is shelling out for most of this with the Royal purse rather than with my tax kronor.   And some people call me Conservative ;-)

My grandfather had the right idea about the royal family. He said “if they came into the garden, I’d close the curtains”.

I’m just about persuaded by the idea that they bring in tourism in the UK and thus tolerate them. However, the idea of being one of the cheering masses or sitting riveted to the TV watching the “elite” having a party doesn’t appeal to me.

In the case of the Swedish royals, they seem even more pointless than the British Royals. Actually, I should probably call the latter lot German Royals – one doesn’t find many Battenbergs (cunningly anglicised 100 years ago to Mountbatten) and Sax-Coberg-Gothas in Wallsend.
