I am really disappointed to read in todays local that the Moderates are selecting candidates based upon gender.
Moderate Party ‘half our candidates will be women’
As regular readers know I am trying to work out which Party I would support here in Sweden and I was leaning more towards the Moderates. However this kind of policy stinks!
Let me make this clear, I am not against female candidates, I am not against black candidates, or albino ones come to that. What I am against is the disgraceful policy enforced by the politically correct brigade of ‘positive discrimination’.
As an old school liberal I believe people should be judged on merit, not their sex, education or family. This really does go against my political principles. Surely political parties should be looking to recruit people with the best abilities?
Maybe Fredrik Reinfeldts Party has a hard time recruiting female candidates but then they should look inward towards themselves rather than enforce such draconian lists.
The British Labour Party did this and it backfired on them spectacularly in the Welsh valleys. Until recently in Wales you didnt count the Labour Party vote you weighed it! But Peter Law resigned from the Labour Party when they forced the constituency to have a female candidate and he won the safest Labour seat in Wales with a staggering 58% of the vote. The good people of Blaenau Gwent voted for the best candidate, Mr Law had been a Councillor for over 30 years, a Welsh Assembly Member and ran a general store all his life.
I wonder if Centerpartiet and Folkpartiet have lists based on gender? Does anyone know as this really will affect where I cast my vote in the Euro Elections. As for now sorry Mr Reinfeldt you have probably just lost my vote and who knows I may have actually helped your campaign here in Stockholm.

I agree. How about judging candidates by the content of their character? I am an American of Swedish ancestry. I have never been there but I try and watch the news. I am concerned about what I see.

To be honest with Swedish politics is very different from the usual left-right thing we see in the UK. The Swedish Alliance is doing a great job in the main but stuff like this is awful.
I seem to recall the leader of the Moderates (ie conservative) backing Obama in the US elections. Silly man! Its all very different here but fascinating!
Indeed, Obama uses the Saul Alinsky “Rules for Radicals” campaign tactics. So obvious and not an honest way to communicate, the media (except Fox) never called him on it. Now many moderates who supported him are turning against him because he is going hard left, anti-capital polices and hard core government control. In the first bill they passed they were able to sneak in language to undermine ethics and to undermine the previously very successful welfare reform that was done by Newt Gingrich and Bill Clinton.
They are also trying to take the census away from the commerce department that has lots of legal and ethics chacks and move it to the White House. If they get away with doing that they will be able to manipulate how congressional districts are drawn and inflate the number of districts for those who will vote for him and reduce the number of those who will vote against.
Economically America may be facing the worst president it has ever has with economic policy, Herbert Hoover, FDR. LBJ and Jimmy Carter were all a disaster for the economy.
Also, since most of the people who got paid in the mortgage industry sscandal that was the catalyst for the global economic turbdown were Democrats, Obama is doing nothing about the ethics issues that caused it.
I pay very close attention to what happens in American politics, and I can tell you that by reading the newspapers or watching NBC, CBS or ABC you are going to get very little unslanted hard news.
I love your site by the way, there are very few sites that cover Swedish news in English so your site is very important.
