It has been a pleasure this week to show around some friends from the UK. Jez and his family (partner, two boys and a 6 month old baby) flew over on Tuesday and go back on Friday.
Its amazing how proud I have become of my adopted home town. There is so much to do in Stockholm. You can never get stuck for places to take visitors.
Fjäderholmarna
On Tuesday night we hopped on a boat to Fjäderholmarna, the nearest islands to Stockholm itself. Its about 30 mins on a boat from Slussen. They are fairly small but a lovely little spot to visit. A few shops, a place to fika, a pricey but nice restaurant Rokeriet, craft shops even a place to try Swedish Whiskey Mackmyra.
There is a great playground in the shape of a pirate ship, great for the kids. There is something very cosy about this island. Maybe it would be good to come and fish here one early morning, just me, the rocks, the water and a flask of darjeeling.
My friends and their kids really enjoyed it.
Yesterday they spent the day at Skansen on Djurgården which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Last night I took them on a little tour of Stockholms best island…Södermalm. I took them to the top of Gondolen for the view over Stockholm. Here is a top tip, if you go up Katarina Hissen you have to pay…if you hit the door next to McDonalds and use the lift for Gondolen its free…
We then walked around Mösebacke and then to one of my favourite Stockholm spots, not really a smultronställe…I took them to Medis (medborgaplatsen) and then to the very Swedish pub Kvarnen. Jez’s kids wanted to try Swedish meatballs and for me Kvarnen offer the best köttbullar here. Mind you, my boss reckons that Pelican is also very good so might have to give that a try. I wanted to go to Kvarnen because Jez is a football fan so I wanted to take him to a Bajen pub.
It was amusing for me at one point as Jez’s partner called me Uncle Shane to the baby! Ha ha, not been called that before! I now know why a certain Miss P loves her niece calling her Moster…thats Moster..short for Mothers Sister…not Monster ok, I know I have dated some monsters in the past but…
Seriously it was kind of cool. My world doesnt have babies in it so it was interesting to see how families cope with a 6 month old and also the pleasure they bring. Their young baby never stopped smiling!
The other good thing about having visitors from UK, is to a) gauge their reaction to Sweden and b) the humour, its nice to be able to slot straight back into British humour which if I am honest the Swedes dont often get…
