I actually watched the Nobel Banquet on Tv the other night. I thought I would only stick it on for a few minutes but found myself watching the whole thing.
Luckily a friend of mine was over and able to help with some of the Swedish.
The Nobel Banquet is for the Nobel Prize winners and the dinner is attended by the Swedish King and his family and basically anyone else who is a somebody is there! Thankfully my friend pointed out some Swedish ‘celebs’ that I would never know though I recognised the politicians of course. Though Cecilia wasnt there
The whole thing was bizarre, you basically watch them all eating whilst the commentators are gushing in their praise of the Swedish Royal Family and got all offended when the camera panned onto Anders Borg, Swedens Finance Minister who was breaking all the rules by sending a text from under the table. Naughty boy!
After the dinner, the Prize winners get up and speak and I found that interesting. Science was my worst subject at school, probably because I saw no reason to learn about verterbrae or chemical reactions. However now I have a mild interest especially in Astronomy so it was interesting. Well apart from the women who won the Literature prize who banged on well over her time limit.
After the dinner the camera pans on the guests who then dance in the ballroom at Stadshuset. I still havent been in there and thats on my list for next year.
Not sure I would bother to watch the Nobel Banquet next year, but it did intrigue me.
There is no way the BBC cameras would film the Queen eating for 2 hours, there is no way the table of honour would not be on a raised platform at the top of the hall. I rather like the way the Royal table was on the same level and in the middle.
I am still not certain about the Swedish monarchy, I think the King is a good bloke and the Crown Princess does not seem to put her foot wrong. The young Prince seems to be bit of a twat, going on big spending sprees when the rest of the country is struggling economically. I do think they are a lot more democratic and down to earth than the British Royals thats for sure.
My friend also told me that the King can vote….? Is this true?
Of course all this was going on at Stockholm, whilst next door in Oslo the Nobel Peace Prize was being rendered worthless as it was given to a man who has actually not deserved it (yet!) and done nothing. They claim the award was given to Obama for his intentions..hmmmm So I intend to write the best bit of literature seen since Thomas Hardy can I have my Prize now please. What a joke!
