Åshöjdens BK
I started watching one of my presents tonight, the DVD of the Swedish series Åshöjden.
Once I got over the fashion and haircuts of Eighties Sweden, the very wooden acting, the fact the main character looks like Vladimir Putin and the short skirts I started to get into it. I am watching it primarily to improve my Swedish language skills.
Only snag is I struggle with the accent, I think this was set in Skåne. Its still Swedish but its similar to when Englishman talks to someone with a thick Belfast or Glasgow accent, its the same language but you have to train your ears a little.
Fortunately it has subtitles so I was able to follow and pick up some words. This should help me to learn Swedish much faster than before.
New Swedish words learnt from episode one and teo
Lira – to play (slang)
en sak – one thing, as in Columbo, just one thing!
pärs – trial/test/ordeal
kloka -wise or inte riktigt kloka – not all there
stenhård – hard as nails
tattare – tramp
behålla – to stick to
cementröv? didnt get his., I know röv is ass but cementröv? According to Hasse its to be stubborn. Lit. cement arse!
Störa – to disturb. Stör jag? Am I disturbing you? In games it means to interfere
fatta -to understand
Thanks to Emma and Hasse for their corrections.

Klocka = watch (clock). I think you mean ‘kloka’
Tattare = tramp like in ‘gypsy’ (not hooker)
Störa = in games ‘interfere’
Cementröv = 1. Stubborn, inflexible person, unwilling to change
2. Constipated person
3. Dull, slow, immobile person
And maybe cementröv influenced your subconscious to write
Arshöjden BK. Should be Åshöjden BK.
It’s Åshöjdens BK (no r) and it’s indeed set in north western Skåne.
Tattare is a word I’d try and forget if I were you as it’s a very non-pc term for [romer] these days. To be wise is to be klok (no ck), or inte riktigt kloka – to be crazy. Att fatta something is to catch something in the meaning to understand something.
Thanks both.
I have amended it in the post. Hmm who would have thought I would have learnt so much from the first two episodes.
You are right I did right Års instead of Ås – I think its because of the unenglish letter Å which sounds like awwwwww.
Tea Cosie Pete – Ttattare
