Language fascists complain about too much English

Interesting little read in todays Local – Stockholm reported for using too much English

Its seems some language fascists who call themselves ‘The Language Defence Network‘ Språkforsvaret have reported Stockholm Council and with that the local Tourist Board to the Parliamentary Ombudsman for using too much English!

I am all for preserving languages but its hardly as if the 9 million Swedes are going to start using English just because the Swedish Tourist Board use the motto ‘Stockholm – The Capital of Scandinavia’.

I had enough of these cranks when I lived in Wales but there at least Welsh was very much a minority language.

Its crucial that the Tourist organisations use English to attract more foreign visitors to Sweden. Therefore helping the Swedish economy.

I think the Language Defence Network would be better off demanding that all films showing on Swedish TV should be dubbed in Swedish as I believe that is the greatest threat to the Swedish language.

I am amazed with the amount of 1 liners that Swedish people use to sound cool or something.
I think its great sometimes that Swedes speak such good English but there is no need for a group of Swedes to use English together.

As for dubbed I guess it would make our lifes easier learning the language but it was horrible in Barcelona not being able to watch anything but CNN, BBC News and MTV in English.
