Knock Knock Knocking on Voters Doors

in Our Man in Sweden,Swedish Politics

In the UK, its customary at election times to get a knock on the door from the local political parties, all vying for your vote. Well I rephrase that, its really only if you live in a marginal seat that the Parties bother but…

I am not so sure the British politicians and certainly their campaign teams will fancy knocking doors after the MPs expenses scandal. Any one for a Duck House?

I was interested to read a survey in todays Dagens Nyheter that 80% of Swedes do not want a politican to telephone nor to knock on their door. However 61% of those asked said they would be happy to receive Party literature. 49% said they were ok with Parties advertising on TV.

I am really surprised to read that in Sweden politicians actually knock doors. The Swedes are intensely private, christ you get looked at suspiciously if you knock your neighbours door so I would have to be knocking from the political world.

I think its a shame, I am old school and like it when politicians bother to get off their arses and speak to voters directly. However the snag is they only come at election time so are always agreeing with you.

I was also surprised to read the estimated costs for each Party for next years campaign. It show how big the Socialdemokraterna are within Swedish society. Its also worrying to see that DN claims Sverige Demokraterna will spend 20 million. Quite where Centerpartiet get their 65 million from I dont know, I thought farming was on its knees…

Socialdemokraterna   70 million
Centerpartiet  65 million
Moderaterna At least 30 million (they are the ruling party and not spending as much as the small Centerpartet..surely a typo here?)
Folkpartiet 20 million
Sverigedemokraterna 19 million
Kristdemokraterna 17 million
Miljöpartiet 7 million
Vänsterpartiet 7 million

Interesting.
