Jävla Gefle

in Hammarby, Our Man in Sweden

Bloody Gefle didnt read the script today did they!

They weren’t supposed to come to Bajenland and beat us!

It was a very interesting day and I need to sort my footage out. Started off at Medis with a beer and then joined the Hammarby fans on their march to the ground. It was a surreal experience to walk through Gotgatan, the traffic was stopped from using it as this was a Bajen Party.

I still cant get my head around the whole ‘Ultras’ thing, they were at the front with their sometimes funny, sometimes clever and sometimes menacing banners. It was marshalled by themselves which is another intersting facet of the whole Ultras movement.

Then there were fireworks, smoke bombs, flares, what a way to start a season! The sides of the streets were busy with Bajen fans watching as it if was a carnival in Rio.

The Hammarby fans didnt stop singing all the way to Söderstadion.  Am pleased to report there was no trouble, the police presence was minimal and they weren’t needed. My only regret is people leaving glass bottles on the floor, dangerous as hell, especially for the kids.

I got into the ground, proudly brandishing my season ticket. I picked up a copy of the Ultras ‘fanzine’, more on that later. I actually went and stood with them but I left after 20 mins as I actually wanted to see the game and the boys as well as making lots of noise, wave their massive flags and banners.

Gefle went one up with very lax defending and against the run of play. I popped out at 40 mins to grab a beer and a hot dog, as I was ordering my pint I heard a tremendous roar as Charlie Davies the Hammarby striker had equalised.

Typical!

The second half was very entertaining. Fair play to Bajen they try and keep it on the ground and knock it back but their final pass was lacking. Also there were several attacks where if the ball had been passed to the guy in space..well…I guess I need to realise the standard of Allsvenskan is not quite up there with the standard I am used to watch. Still it was a thriller though the northerners scored on a rare foray up front and Bajen just couldnt pull it back.

Hammarby looked a bit rusty, they dont look that great at the back though I am sure Tony will sort that out. Djurgården next week, the first Stockholm derby and I will be there! They lost 6-0 yes 6-0 to IFK Göteborg yesterday so it could be an interesting one next Monday.

I still love the fact that

a) Hammarby fans do not stop singing during the entire match

b) They dont moan at their own players during the game but at the final whistle there was a lot of booking, the Bajen players certainly knew that the fans weren’t happy.

Yes gutted we lost but still nice to get out there and see some live football, I have missed it.

Forza Bajen!
