Iran -two wrongs dont make a right

Disappointed to read that the Iranian Embassy in Stockholm was stormed this week by protestors.

Whilst I am not saying their cause is wrong (or right!) this kind of activity only goes to strengthen the existing regime.

I personally dont think we should meddle in other countries affairs, how do we, here in the West know exactly whats gone on in Tehran? How do we know there was electoral fraud?…..

I am no friend of the Iranian regime since they kidnapped several British naval officers a while back but still…storming their embassy would have done their case no good at all.

A regard for facts is rarely a hallmark of those who like to protest (especially the serial protestors). For those who believe they’re ideologically in the right the facts are an irrelevance and are there only to be twisted.

IMO the most important reason why the embassy incursion should be condemned is that by respecting other countries diplomatic rights and properties ours will be similarly protected. Once enough precedents of the type seen in Sweden are set, the sanctity of diplomatic immunity and protection will be routinely violated. This would lead to many negative consequences, not least for the various dissidents living under dictatorships who often find refuge and support in various Western embassies.

One day, should any of today’s protestors be brave enough to actually go to Iran and annoy the authorities there, they may well be grateful for the security of a Swedish diplomatic compound.
