Hooked on Bandy!

in Our Man in Sweden

What a day out yesterday..minus 11 and watching a Bandy game. Hammarby were playing League leaders Sandviken, I really enjoyed the first half though the Hammarby fans werent so impressed with their teams efforts.

The second half was a different story as the Mighty Bajen hammered Sandviken and coasted to a 10-5 victory. This is the equivalent of Man Utd losing 5-0 to someone like Aston Villa.

It was half the crowd of the Boxing Day game which was a shame as this really was the game that converted me to the game.  Before I went along for the experience and a few jars but I really got into it yesterday. Maybe because Henrik Möller was with us and he really knows his Bandy so he was able to explain some of the rules!

Oh and it might have helped that I stuck to coffee with no alcohol at all, even tucked into a Pytt i Panna (there goes the detox!) in the Tälte.

I really recommend Bandy especially if like me you are a foreigner its a great replacement for football!

I agree about bandy! Great sport and crowd at Zinken. My friend’s kids also play there. SBBK vs. Hammarby on Jan 17… he is partial to Bajen, but he has to root for his boys and SBBK.

Absolutely bloody runs thicker than water and all that.

I might be in Iowa next year. Early days yet but I love the USA and fancy doing a three to four week tour of the States that never get that many UK visitors.

You know most people (including myself) do Vegas, NYC, LA. I wanna do Des Moines and Little Rock!

Shane, yes… Iowa and Arkansas can be good places to visit, if you are searching for very specific US cultural experiences. Before I saw my first bandy match, I was told that it would be a chance to experience Swedish culture. In our part of the state (near Iowa City) we have our own version of bandy – Hooverball. Not a very popular sport outside of eastern Iowa (or within for that matter). The corn fields are pretty quiet and the people are very relaxed. If you are looking for a guide, let me know.

I will definitely take you up on that next year if I make it to Iowa. I will bring you a Bajen shirt, I will bring you two if you find me a hot Iowan Farmers daughter in her early thirties who wants to live in Sverige ;-)

A Swedish friend, after living for a year in Iowa, once said “One out of ten is about the best I have seen in Iowa”. He was referring to the number of attractive women. I think he was pretty close to the mark, but you never know! I will be on the lookout for your request. Let me know… I can always use another Bajen shirt.
