Happy New Year

in Our Man in Sweden

Woah what a rollercoaster ride this year has been.

Swansea City in the Championship! A Democrat in the White House, Liverpool top of the league, a very senior promotion ,switched from Microsoft to a Mac oh and spent the whole year (bar two weeks) in a foreign land!

I have really enjoyed my time in Sverige and hoping for many more years to come. Yes the Swedish dark days have got to me, the aggro involved in getting a bank account and person nummer got to me, Swedish labour law is archaic, there have been some frustrations but on the main I see no reason to leave.

I guess we always reflect at this time of year. I am not a big fan of New Years Eve, I tend to think back to people I knew, places I lived, missed opportunities, yes its a bit maudlin but then I am  a Morrissey man.

Today though I am bucking the trend. I am cooking a nice plump turkey with all the trimmings for Miss P and myself. We shall go up to the hill near me at midnight and look out over Stockholm with our champagne. This for me is far better than going out and getting smashed as I would have done in my twenties. I never did it in my teens Mum honest ;-)

The last few years I have spent new years, alone. My choice, I usually get a nice bottle of Scotch stick on a favourite DVD and enjoy the evening that way. Miss P was having none of that!

I saw a video on youtube today by the Dove. I hadn’t seen it in years. The song is ok but its the video thats grabs my attention.  My interpretation is of a man in his fifties living a dreary life, pushing the trolley around the supermarket, thinking about all his missed opportunities in life. Funny how so many women seem to be included!

I think this is rather inspirational and something to reflect on as we all go into a new year.

Happy New Year to you all! I hope yours is prosperous and fun!
