Guest blogger…

in Learn Swedish

How strange, just over a year ago I wasn’t a blogger…and now I am guest blogging for the Learn Sweden site.

I will be interviewing Valerie when she is back from her cruise. I like the look of their programme because it includes a Skype conversation with a Swedish speaker. I boned up quite a lot before I arrived here and whilst my reading skills are good my speaking skill leaves a lot to be desired. I keep messing my vowels up especially the ‘new’ vowels which are new letters for non Swedes to think about å (awwwwwwwwww) ö (h’eure’ if you speak French) and ä (air).

Miss P is good at correcting me, she is a bit like a Victorian governess who corrects her pupils, albeit Miss P doesnt use a cane ;-) So I am getting on with when I get a word like Johanneshov, o tends to be pronounced ‘oo’ as in typhoo so Störa Essingen is ‘stoora’, but the hov in Johanneshov is pronounced ‘hawv’….so it should really be spelt Johanneshåv!  Still us English speakers cant complain I guess, there are few more irregular rules in the Queens English than most Latin/Germanic based languages.

Oi! Clearly you haven’t been paying attention in my class young man – it’s Stora Essingen, not Störa!! That’s the cane for you… :)
