Getting involved in Swedish Politics

Some of you know that I have been ‘dipping my toes’ into Swedish political life.

When I was in the UK, Liberala Företagare had their kick off event. Board members had been requested. I thought long and hard about this as I do not like to get involved in things that I cant support 100%.

I indicated to GG that I would be interested in getting involved.

On Sunday I received an SMS to say I had been voted onto the Board as an ersättare. This is a Swedish word which means ‘subsititute’. So this effectively means I am on the Board of LF but will not have a vote.  This seems fair to me as I am still learning the ropes and my intention is only to advise Liberala Företagare on how I see this as an international manager and businessman with the Swedish setup.

GG assures me that ‘ersättare’ is good practice and almost like a proving ground.

I see and hear a lot of things within Swedish business that quite frankly scares me. I hope to highlight a few of these things with ‘foreign eyes’ and hopefully help Liberala Företagare campaign to make Sweden a better place for business, entrepreneurs but with a social conscience.

Next week I will also attend my first meeting of my local branch Årsta-Enskede Folkpartiet I am a firm believer that you should only be active where you live. Thats why I always hated candidates that stood for areas where they dont live. I enjoy living in Årsta and if I can help influence policy or help people get elected who can make Årsta even better then its all worth it!

Good for you. I hope it goes well.

On another note, I also feel strongly about the need for candidates being resident in the areas which they aim to represent.

Well done Shane, good for you. The world needs people who are strong enough to be involved instead of whinging about things and doing nothing. I agree that it is better to live in the are you represent, too.

Thanks both.

I am seeing things through very different eyes than when I knew you Rebecca.

I think Sweden has got so much right but there are some very odd things that need to be reformed. I am sure our current Government would have liked to have been bolder but their have a wafer thin majority and cant afford to piss people off like the last centre right government did.
