Cost of living in Sweden…the sunday dinner index

in Our Man in Sweden

I cooked a roast dinner today, a part of my British heritage that I love.

P1000337Its a lot of stress but you cant beat a Sunday roast especially after a night on the town. One of my fondest memories as a teenager was the smell of the Sunday roast that my mother had cooked. Mine comes nowhere near hers.

Anyway I digress.

Think I overdid it with the spuds!

I often get asked about the difference in prices between the  UK and Sweden so I thought I would try and source the UK prices for my shopping items online and compare them here. I have converted the Swedish Kronor to GBP.

  • Lemon  28p (UK)   31p (Sweden)
  • 6 organic eggs   £2.05 (UK)   £1.51 (Sweden)
  • bag of five onions  £1 (UK)    £1.60 (Swe)
  • Cornfed whole chicken   1.6kgs £7 (UK)  £9.80 (swe)
  • Foil   £1.84 (UK)   £2 (Swe)
  • vegetable oil £1.26 (UK)   £2.35 (swe)
  • I litre semi skimmed milk 86p (UK)   63p (sweden)
  • carrots (bag)  58p (UK)  £1.09 (swe)
  • Parsnips  £1 (UK) £1.64 (sweden)
  • 4 big baked potatoes £2 (UK) £2.65 (sweden)
  • Rosemary 79p (UK) £2.09 (swe)
  • Celery   50p (UK)  £1.66 (swe)
  • bag of flour £1.19 (UK) 91p (sweden)

I used Tesco UK prices and I shopped at ICA today so yes maybe I could have got cheaper but I think this will give us a good indication. So the totals…

P1000341

My shopping basket in the UK would have been:

£20.35

My Shopping Basket in Sweden came in at:

£28.24

Not a huge difference but if you tot that up over a few times a week, then times that by fifty two weeks then its a significant rise. Sweden is definitely more expensive than the UK especially when it comes to fresh vegetables. Though surprisingly some thing such as eggs were cheaper here.

The dinner though will serve 4 so still only 7 quid a head with plenty left over, a lot cheaper than a restaurant and no Aunt Bessies here..my yorkshire puddings are home made!

Damn that looks good!

I havent had a roast for a few months due to the warmer weather, but now that the Autumn is settling in, I feel compelled to start doing them again also :)

1 tip, NEVER and I mean NEVER have a sunday lunch at the “Tudor Arms” pub in Östermalm. They are a lovely pub, but I will never eat a roast there again as it was wobbly.

Oh , 1 more thing …. ICA globen usually has rather good cuts of beef if you are after good and cheap nice beef cuts.

Which is why poultry and dairy farmers are really struggling in this country :( Plus, factor in the distances involved in transportation to and within Sweden. It all adds up.
Looks like a fab dinner – you even turned the chicken the right way this time ;)

Thanks for the tip Mark.

I dont usually cook these in the summer, but was rather hung over this morning and pissed off and thought why not cook some comfort food!

Emma, I dont mind paying for good meat and veg. I do get frustrated by some of the veg on offer in Sverige though. The chicken was cornfed so again I could have got a cheaper one but you know me ;-)

You need gravy :)

In regards to Veg over here you are very right.

I am hoping to buy veg boxes direct from the UK for me and a couple of friends.

If you are interested, I can let you know if its possible logistically and economically.

Yeah mate, let me know. I do get a box every two weeks from Årstiderna but still.

Oh and I did make gravy my friend. Schoolboy error otherwise. Just wish I could get it like my Mums!

This really does look fab. Very impressive, not to mention interesting. This was the first post I’ve read…I’m definitely checking out the rest of your site. Can you tell me the name of the English shop in Stockholm? and is there anywhere to eat really nice homemade British food? Other than your house, of course :)
thanks!

I am considering a job in Sweden-Stockholm, but I want to do my research to understand if we will have a better quality of life in Sweden than in the UK. My Question is to all you who live in Sweden…. How much (in koron) is the monthly family shop (2 adults 2 Children, 13 & 8 boys).
How much is a house to rent outside Stockholm in koron per month?
what is the cost of petrol and car insurance?
What is the cost of house insurance (3/4 beds)?

Any help in making this difficult decision is appreciated.
Thanks
Colin
