Hi Shane,
Nice to discover you and your blog on the expat site.

I am an American professional songwriter here from NY. I also live in Mariatorget, Sodermalm.
I have been here 4 months and am as in love with the place as you are. I have met such diverse and interesting people right here on my block.
I live on St. Paulsgatan.

I haven’t had any contact with any expats, except a sweet family from California who walk their dog about the same time as do mine and of course, dog owners speak to one another, a PLUS in a strange city/country.

I am interested in the Butcher Shoppe to which you referred in your blog. And I am always on the look out for P.G. Tips tea. I haven’t tried the English shop at Saluhall yet, maybe today.

I wish you a Happy New Year and hope we run into each other at some point.

Kindest regards,
Sharon Vaughn

Welcome Sharon,

How are you finding Stockholm and Sverige?

You are so lucky to have a dog, I really want to have one.

The butchers shops is Taylors and Jones http://www.taylors.se
Tell them Swansea Shane sent you and I am sure they will look after you.

I think you can PG Tips at the English Shop, I have a big box from a local supermarket on Hornsgatan but I cant remember which one.

Sweden has some great teas, you can go to the tea centre of Mariatorget – http://www.teacentre.se

As you are now a Söder girl you need to try Söderbländning te. Its very nice but rather pungent in a pleasant way. Söderhallarna has some great tea, there is a little stand called Himalayas, I can recommend the Munk Te which is like a rum and coconut and the Queen Anne blend which is peach.

Always happy to fika and tell you more!

I bought my guitar on St Paulsgatan.

helloooooo.

I am moving to the North of Sweden to live with my girlfriends family in Umeå. Maybe you can open up an office up there and sort me out with a job? I saw a moose over Xmas. Can you believe that?

Rory Fallon, what a legend.

Thanks!

Jim från Swindon. Jag förstår lite Svenska. Kan jag få två öl tack? Jag ar full!

Theres only one Rory Fallon! Ha Ha!

I think the only ones he scored for was yourselves. Luckily Plymuff took him off our hands for the same price we gave you 300k.

Been awhile since I was at the County Ground last.

Umeå, wow thats like living in Aberdeen compared to where you are now! How exciting though Jim! I hope you set up a blog and tell us all about it? I imagine Umeå is very different than Stockholm. I hope to get up there at some point soon.

Stay in touch and let us know how you get on.

So Far I have visited Stockholm, umeå and Gothenborg. Umeå was over Christmas so was increadibly snowy! I really liked it, perhaps more than the other two cites. this might have been because I was with family and friends etc… but i dont know!

you should definately go up to the moose farm. Ive never seen a moose before, they are amazing!

I think I will start a blog…

im pretty scared of not being able to get a job…but i dont have a job now so it doesnt matter! im going to study at the university (swedish obviously) plus hopefully get a part time job being a snow plough/beer seller.

ive got rosetta stone which is teaching me swedish. my word it would be so much easier if i was there!

cheers for your reply.

So Shane,

You talk of learning swedish in a lot of your blogs. I would like to know what your overall level is after a year of learning. Assuming you didnt know a word before you arrived?

I have been with my lovely wonderful lady for 2 years now so have picked up a few things. Since Christmas I have been using Rosetta Stone, which has helped me a million times more than the bird!

But do you feel confident enough to have a conversation in a shop (nothing detailed but just about the weather or where is the öl etc)?
if you overhear people can you understand their conversation?

Do you think you could go a whole day without speaking English?

I’m getting pretty scared, only 11 months to go till I am chucked in the deep end!

Hej hej
I am a Brit in Sverige (after London for 27 years). I married a Swede but did not bother to learn Swedish so now I am starting from scratch. We have moved to the South, to Torsas, near Kalmar. I am really not sure where to start as far as work goes but I will be going to SFI (free Swedish for immigrants) from August 3 hours a day so i am sure that will help but at 47 i have seem to have a sieve memory and the feeling of being embarrassed at getting the language wrong! I do have a contact in Stockholm (MCI Group – global events) but we are trying to settle out of a city and Stockholm is very expensive so at the moment, its country life for me! In the summer it seems at least that is fine. I have a lot to learn and a great deal of patience before things return to a degree of normality for me….good to read your blog though.

Good Luck with it Louise I am sure you will be fine.

I am diversifying this blog a bit and will hopefully be unveiling a new blog next week purely on Learning Swedish. I am also looking at a newsletter and free report on my top ten ‘free’ tips for learning Swedish.

Hi Shane,

Just found your blog!!! I am also from Wales – lived in Neath and went to school in Swansea. I have lived in Sweden since 1989!! Great to know that they sell Malt Vinegar in Stockholm – I usually get my mother to bring a few bottles when she visits – although I live an hour from Stockholm it looks as if the butchers shop is well worth a visit.

Bye for now
Amanda

Hi Amanda

Small world. I was born at Neath General Hospital!

Which school did you attend in Swansea?

When you come to Stockholm, the English butchers is definitely worth it. Just to get served by a Swansea boy is enough let alone the great food they have on offer.

Then go to Medborgaplatsen and Söderhallarna and visit the English Shop, lots of good stuff in there!
