Björklund puts his foot down

February 19, 2010

This weeks newsletter from Jan Björklund is an interesting one.

He lashes out at Skolverket who want to strip out ancient history and the history of the Middle Ages from the curriculum.
He writes:
‘Ancient History is the cradle of Western civilization. The Middle Ages is a crucial era when Sweden became Sweden, our share of world Christianity, [...]

Birgitta Ohlsson..Minister!

February 2, 2010

I was delighted to wake up to the news that Birgitta Ohlsson has been made a Minister in the Swedish Goverment. She will now serve as Swedens EU Minister. There was a vacancy because Cecilia Malmström (swoons!) became a EU Commissioner.

Some of you will remember that I met Birgitta at the Swedish Parliament and volunteered [...]

LMTYAS is the 67th most influential Folkpartiet blog online…

January 27, 2010

Thats ccording to the results of todays Politometern.  The results are based on over 930,000 inbound links from the Swedish blogosphere.
I am rather surprised at that considering this is a blog about my life in Sweden rather than a Folkpartiet blog as such. Also my knowledge of many Swedish issues is still rather light.
Not to [...]

Moving my Swedish into a new phase.

January 24, 2010

Today I attended my first internal Swedish political meeting.
I did mention a few months back that I was an ‘ersättare‘ on the Board of Liberala Företagare. Today I attended my first meeting of the Board.
Of course its all in Swedish, I cant expect them to talk English just for me.  In the main I could [...]

I am officially sad

November 22, 2009

I just had a go at Dagens Nyheters quiz ‘How well do you know Folkpartiet’ and scored….drum roll please…six out of seven. Shameful! I am such an anorak!
Vad kan du om Folkpartiet?
The one I got wrong was which election did Folkpartiet attract the most votes. i said ‘56 and it was in fact ‘52!

Getting involved in Swedish Politics

November 15, 2009

Some of you know that I have been ‘dipping my toes’ into Swedish political life.
When I was in the UK, Liberala Företagare had their kick off event. Board members had been requested. I thought long and hard about this as I do not like to get involved in things that I cant support 100%.
I indicated [...]

The Swedish Liberals want the State to take back control of schools

October 20, 2009

Hmm..quite surprised to read today that Folkpartiet are considering giving back control for the primary responsibility of schools from the local authority to national government.
One of my political values has always been that of decentralisation but it seems in this case it hasn’t worked for Sweden. Jan Björklund states that the kommuner are blaming government [...]

Bjorklund wins the Stockholm Riksdagprovvalet!

October 16, 2009

Great to read tonight that Jan Bjorklund topped the Stockholm Stad provvalet (selection) for the Riksdag. Also great to read that Birgitta Ohlsson is number 2 on the poll.
I disclosed my votes a few weeks back and I voted for those two. Some really good candidates on the list. I am looking forwarding to helping [...]

Democracy in action- folkpartiet provval

September 29, 2009

Today I received my voting papers for the Folkpartiet Provval till Riksdagen 2009. A Provval is similar to a US Primary where you vote for your favourite Party candidates but in Sweden as in the UK only paid up Party Members get to vote.
I have six first preference votes and six second preference votes. I [...]

Tea at the Swedish Parliament

August 11, 2009

Today I had ‘fika’ at the Swedish Parliament with a very interesting Swedish MP called Birgitta Ohlsson.
We discussed my recent article on Swedish temporary contracts and we discussed ideas for helping the Party and herself be far more effective online. Not she isnt effective online, she is very pro-active on the net. Thats actually how [...]
