Bröderna Lejonhjärtna is a very famous kids story here in Sweden.

Its written of course by Astrid Lindgren.

Last weekend I watched the film adaptation of this, mainly to improve my Swedish.

I was not expecting this to be so dark!

The film starts off with the youngest brother dying of a terminal disease. His old brother then dies in a fire. They both then find themselves in teh after life Nangijala. Even there all is not well as there is oppression by the nasty Tengril!

At the end of the film, one of the brothers is mortally injured so they both commit suicide in order to go back to Nangijala!!!

Only a Swedish author could have two brothers topping themselves as a ‘happy’ ending!!!

As far as I know The Brothers Lionheart is Astrid Lindgren’s most controversial book. Not all adults think that kids should read about mortal illnesses, suicide and death in general. I’ve known the book since I was a little kid and always liked it. It’s kind of scary but also full of fascinating character traits such as bravery, honour and virtue, things that make you love the brothers. And to a kid the idea that even a small, sickly boy can be brave and heroic is of course appealing. This book is actually my favourite among Astrid Lindgren’s work. But she wrote a lot of great books. I recommend Emil från Lönneberga if you want something less gloomy. It includes a lot of Swedish culture showing the live of the country folk in Sweden.
