On Monday Jan 15th, 2008 13.30 hrs I took off from Stansted bound for Stockholm Skavsta to start a new life, I moved to Sweden on a six month secondment to a new office we had opened. I had moved to train some staff and then go back to the UK.
Life has a funny way of working out. Within months I was promoted to head the Nordic office and operation. This was never my plan or ambition. So I have gone from enjoying six months in Sweden to starting to think about buying a place and even what political party I should support. The football team was sorted very early on, Forza Bajen, the Political Party…Folkpartiet Liberalerna.
UPDATE MAY 2009…bought a lovely little flat in Årsta.
I started this blog just before I left Blighty, you can read the first years worth of posts here. I started the blog as something to look back on when I got back to the UK, I also kept it so friends and family could share in my new experiences and discoveries.
It was interesting that other people who were looking for information on living or moving to Sweden also visited the blog looking for info and support.
The blog has evolved somewhat, it does include political and social commentary along with photos of new places and experiences.
I have moved from the interestingclouds wordpress blog to a self hosted one because it gives me more features. The blog up until December 27th has received 34,391 visits and I feel I can provide a better blog on a self hosted platform. Yes I am showing some ads but any revenue goes towards exploring Sweden which hopefully readers will appreciate in the form of blog posts.
You can add me to twitter to keep updated http://twitter.com/shaneinsweden
The name of this blog is indeed a nod to the Stranglers, a great band but they also wrote a song called ‘Sweden -All Quiet on the Eastern Front’. Hugh Cornwell was at Lund University for some time but I am hoping things have changed a little since he was in Sweden.
Sweden (All Quiet On The Eastern Front)
Let me tell you about Sweden
Only country where the clouds are interesting
Big brother says it’s the place to go
Too much time to think, too little to do
Too much time to think, too little to do
Too much time, too little to do
‘Cos it’s all quiet on the Eastern front
Fluctuations at a minimum
Hypochondriac tombstone
Sense of humour’s gone astray somewhere
Too much time to think, too little to do
Too much time to think, too little to do
Too much time, too little to do
‘Cos it’s all quiet on the Eastern front
Cumulus nimbus floats by
Fluctuations at a minimum
Hypochondriac tombstone
Big brother says it’s the place to go
It’s all quiet on the Eastern front
(All quiet on the Eastern front)
It’s all quiet on the Eastern front
(All quiet on the Eastern front)
It’s all quiet on the Eastern front
It’s all
Quiet
To be fair I really like Stockholm and Sweden and at this moment in time see no reason to leave!

Shane I commented elsewhere but wanted to say – Congratulations! You’ve done really well with this and the new blog looks fantastic! Nice to read the full story too.
yayyy 50,000 visitors!
Always wondered how/where/what and why, long lost friends, ex-colleagues and aquaintances, have got on and how life has developed for them.
Great success story Shane, hope it continues.
Shane, I like this site! I’ll have to remember to keep popping in to take a look. It’s great to see how you are getting on in a different country. I’d love to do it myself although not sure I ever will.
All the best, Karl
