Wow. The mind..and body never cease to amaze me, especially mine.
Six weeks or so back I struggled to run 10mins, today I smashed through the 10kms mark!!
I had initially decided that I would have a forty minute run in the gym but something in my mind clicked. It was as if someone had flicked an invisible switch in my head. A bit like the Numskulls. Remember them?
When the switch was flipped my subconscious was thinking how nice it would be to hit my goal on this run, to make the jump from a 5k run to 10kms. So that was it showtime.
I was fine until around 7.5kms when I started to flag. It was as if another switch was flipped telling me that at any sign of pain I should stop because I do not want to get injured again. I had to fight off these thoughts as I wanted to push through and see 10k distance in lights on my machine.
I huffed and puffed, the last 2kms was like torture, I will confess to a few short fast walking breaks around 6.5kms per hour speed because I was really pushing myself to a level I have not been at in many years if at all. And a level that quite frankly I was not prepared for.
Then I did it, the sweat pouring down my face, my shirt soaked. In my head I let off a massive ‘YEEEEEAAAAHHHHHH! I gave the imaginary audience a bow and trundled along for another half k to warm down.
I didnt feel as euphoric as I thought I would. Just dazed and really asking myself if I had really run 10kms. Well the machine doesnt lie.
Of course the run was torture and it was too much to soon. Realistically I need to build myself up from 5km to 10km gradually so I can do it in an hour, this effort was 1hr 15 mins but it never was about time.
Goals can be achieved, if you set yourself a realistic timetable..I completed mine 8 weeks early!!!!
Another added bonus was hopping on the scales today…I am 3 kilos lighter, if I keep this up I should be at my goal weight within six months. That will be something really worth celebrating.
I would like to thank Mötorhead for entertaining me on my run today. 25th Anniversary Brixton gig, cracking CD. I would also to like to thank Governor Mike Huckabee without whom I would never have started a fitness campaign and Mike Davies of SEALS fame for his running advice and Martin Llangyfelach for showing me that this could be done!
Oh and a massive thanks to those who didnt think I would run 10k, you were the best inspiration of all!
