100 000 people are alone at Christmas

in Our Man in Sweden

According to Match.Com in their research mentioned today by journalist Daniel Boman in Metro.

They claim that 12.4% of single men will be home alone on Christmas Eve. It also claims that most single ladies will spend Christmas with friends and goes on to say that women find it easier to ask friends to spend Christmas with them than guys.

I am one of the 12.4% who will be on his todd this Christmas, save the sympathy though this is my choice.

This is my second Christmas in Sweden and at least this year I have made more friends here. I am touched that so many of them, on realising I was staying put in Sweden have invited me to their homes. One of my senior managers even offered to drive me to his parents place in Småland and was very insistent.

I had a beautiful Christmas last year, you all saw the photos and I have great memories of that.It didnt last, but I wont get all Morrissey about it, you can relax now.

This year will be different, I have my turkey, two nice bottles of Scotch, some great Cheese and of course I bought myself some pressies. The Minder Box Set in particular I cant wait to rip open. Every episode from 1979 to 1994.

I will go to Hammarby Bandy on the 26th! I enjoyed it last year and this year I plan to make my own Bandy Kaffe and really get into the spririt of it.

I will run! I will take long walks, who knows I may even get my fishing rod out even in the ice. Time to pimpla!

I am off work until Jan 11th so I may go abroad for new years eve thats undecided as of yet but I feel I really need these two weeks off. I have put so much energy into my job this year that I actually feel drained now. I didnt take a long holiday this year either because I bought the flat, another reason to recharge.

Lets remember that though I love living in Sweden I am here for my career. I am at the end of year 2 of my five year plan and things have been great. So even if I spend four Christmases alone I know what the endgame is all about and why I am here.

So dont feel sad for me, I will be alone this Christmas but I am bloody looking forward to it.

Next Christmas might be a different story.

That Minder DVD looks cool. I’ve just been onto Amazon to order my own copy. I actually know someone whose dad had a bit part on Minder in the 1980′s. That’s my claim to fame – well that and Sting’s brother being my milkman in the 1970′s. I also once saw Sinbad from Brookside in a shopping centre in Chester, but that really is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Have a nice Xmas.

Hey Shane,
Merry Xmas and a happy new year. I’ve really loved reading your blog these past couple of months from start to finish, tho I was sad to hear you would be alone this year..
…Then I updated my blog, read the entry back to myself, & realised that maybe being on your own is the best thing!! Lol…
Take care

Julie

Actually I am having a great day and tomorrow I am cooking the turkey and will be joined by some friends…

Interesting blog you have there.

‘Flock of Seagulls’ is actually a lyric from a Stranglers track Julie, as is ‘let me tell you about sweden’!

A-ha….now I didn’t know that :-D

…P.s what did you think of my little blog, by the way? Don’t worry, I welcome all input, especially from seasoned bloggers like yourself :-D
I have worried at times these past few months that it was a bit too “dark”, as I’ve been thru a lot this year…..

Oh please post pics of your xmas dinner…even now, I still check out your Sunday dinner post for the sheer yumminess of the pics!!

Julie, the blog is interesting. I never saw myself as a blogger when I started out. I set up the blog because its easiest to tell everyone whats going on in my life than explain over the phone each time.

I really did not think my blog would be of interest to people outside of my own circle so the statistics amaze me.

My advice to you is to blog on what you think is interesting. Especially when you first move over here. Its a great way to show friends and family how you are living and on how beautiful Sweden is.

Its also really funny looking back on your first few posts. Its easy to forget experiences and people but remember this is a diary which the whole world can read.

Some people will take things the wrong way!

Thanks very much for your input, I really appreciate advice from those who have been blogging a lot longer than me. Cheers, Shane :-)
